Asthma & pregnancy?
Sunday, October 12th, 2008 | Asthma Treatment
I am currently 21 weeks pregnant and noticed that for the last 2 weeks I have several asthma attacks in a day. I reached a point where I now use up to 16/20 inhalations from my inhaler a day. I know that this cant possibly be good for the baby. I feel tired and drained and have a hard time sleeping at night. Do you think that I should stop working next month and rest or should I push on as planned till Jan 08, 2 weeks before the baby is born? I have an appointment on 30 Oct and will address this but I want people in similar positions opinions please.

Please Please Please be very careful and take care! keep working if you need to pass your time fruitfully but NOT if it makes you tired. Rest for a few days and work for the other days. Do not let your traveling be straineous. Remember you have a new life to take care of. You need to be there for your baby now and after birth.
Good Luck & God Bless

Yeah that is a lot of inhalations. Go to the doctor so he can give you different medication to help control the asthma instead of treating the attacks. There are great, and safe, drugs available to control asthma so make use of your options. I used two different medications (for asthma) when I was pregnant, and the controller saved my life, because just like you my asthma got worse during pregnancy.
I was using my inhaler roughtly 8x a day and would take two puffs every time. I got pnuemonia in my 19th week and probably used my inhaler 12/13 times a day before I found out I had pnuemonia and wasn’t dying of asthma. My baby was born just over a month ago, and even with all the different meds I had to use to survive he’s just fine and healthy, so don’t worry you’re probably not doing any damage to your baby.
Asthma medication, especially inhalers, is topical, meaning it only treats the affected area (your lungs) and very little of the drug passes into your bloodstream and so to your baby. Still, it’s not good for YOU to use your inhaler that often, so do not wait until the 30th, try to get in to see your doctor asap.
Good luck and congrats on the little one!
